Abstract

Sexual maturation times are various in different fish species longed from several months to years depend on genus and species. Sturgeon matured later than other bony fishes and sexing is impossible at lower age morphologically. Using different techniques for sexing in sturgeon is necessary, because this will prevent financial losses for breeders due to the lack of sex recognition for the cost of several years of male and farm breeding. Therefore, using of different methods such as surgery (biopsy), laparoscopy, ultrasonograpgy and hormonal tests are necessary. Based on results of different studies on sturgeon, endoscopy methods are less invasive and low stress in fish and are suitable for sexing fish at age upper than 2 – 3 years. But surgery based on biopsy is more accurate and suitable method for sexing fish at higher sexual maturity stages.
