Abstract

Wild stocks of the sturgeons, the most commercially important species of the Caspian Sea, have illustrated a sharp reduction during three last decades due to overfishing, loss of the nursery grounds, dam construction and reduction in water input from rivers to the sea. Hence, monitoring the populations and subpopulations available for each species of the sturgeons can act as a practical restocking tool for these valuable species. Moreover, since the sturgeons aquaculture in Iran has not a long history and the farmed populations have been generated from a few wild parents, then classification in the farmed populations can pave the road of their commercial breeding. Considering the recent advances in sequencing technologies namely Next Generation Sequencing, molecular investigations and conservation of the sturgeon’s populations can be performed more accurately in order to identify populations from fine to large scale to provide different genetic lines as the principal component to reach the sustainable aquaculture.
