Abstract

One of the most important stages in artificial reproduction of sturgeons is the egg incubation period. The occurrence of disease during this period could cause a considerable egg loss, which in turn, could pose a serious risk to fingerling supply. Saprolegniosis caused by members of the genus Saprolegnia is one of the most problematic health issues during the sturgeon egg incubation stage. This group of oomycetes are widespread in freshwater aquaculture settings such as hatcheries. Once the conditions are met, particularly, the presence of dead eggs in incubators, they could establish the infection by their mycelial growth and subsequent release of motile zoospores. Many factors could influence the severity of the water mold infection in eggs, including the fertilization rate, the water flow rate, the physicochemical properties of water, the egg density, and the cleanliness of the incubators. While improving the abovementioned criteria could largely improve the hatching success, applying an effective and eco-friendly egg disinfectant for the prevention of saprolegniosis is still highly warranted. In this respect, the natural compounds such as herbal extracts and their active constituents could be promising candidates for controlling saprolegniosis on acipenserid eggs. As a result, a successful plan for controlling water mold infection requires a combination of strategies including choosing the high-quality gametes for fertilization, active monitoring of the eggs during the incubation and removing the dead ones and applying an appropriate antifungal treatment for the egg disinfection.
