Abstract

In order to investigate the feasibility of beluga fish in Sistan, culture of 392 beluga fish (753.7 ± 212.15 g) was done at the Zahak Culture and Breeding Center of native and warmwater fish, Sistan, Iran during 225 days from 10.01.09 to 05.15.10. At the end of period final weight was 2230.7 ± 477.1 g. Mean daily growth was 6.5 g, mean water temperature was 13.9 ± 4.12°C, feed conversion ratio (FCR) with common carp feed was 2.6 and trout feed was 1.5 to 1.9. Then, the fish were separated into two weight categories: 355 fish were cultured in earthen pond and 33 fish in circular concrete pond. At the end of period, final weight, daily growth and F.C.R in concrete ponds were 5069 ± 499 g, 18.45 g and 2.5, respectively. Average water temperature in concrete ponds was 20.8 ˚C. The results showed by providing suitable conditions for beluga culture such as 25 ± 2.2 °C temperature, dissolved oxygen above 6 mg/L and other standard parameters, the growth of this fish in circular-concrete ponds compared to earthen ponds is much better. However, the development of beluga farming in the Sistan region faces limitations such as supply, investment and water scarcity.
